Representatives of the Sunnyside High School staff and school board celebrate the success of the three-year school improvement grant. Washington state schools outperformed the rest of the nation in reading and writing improvements while using the grants. Sunnyside’s dramatic improvement in graduation rates was also singled out by Stephen Miller, vice president of WEA, when he presented a banner to the school in honor of its accomplishments. “Nobody has done that in 10 years, never mind four years,” he said of Sunnyside’s jump from 49 percent graduation to 85 percent graduation. Miller is urging people to write to state representatives to let them know what local control of school funding is capable of achieving.
