YAKIMA – Although the season hasn’t been chockfull of victories, the Sunnyside fastpitch softball team last night had something to celebrate.
The Lady Grizzlies defeated Davis 19-3, the second win for Sunnyside since the season opener against 2A Grandview.
“Our strategy was that we’d play the small game,” said Lady Grizzly Coach Ralph Mendoza.
Sunnyside scored its 19 runs on seven hits and the defense committed just one error against Davis.
For each of the three hits pitcher Amber Cornwell collected, a runner was able to tag home plate.
Dalia Romo of Sunnyside was 2-for-3 at bat, while teammate Maggie Torres hit a double.
Meagan Casseday banged out a two-run double. Teammates Malloree Cupp, Monique Gill and Sam Nassar all drew bases loaded walks, giving the Lady Grizzlies three more runs.
Sunnyside’s Claudia Marchen was hit by one pitch and earned a base on balls to push in two runs.
“We rattled the pitcher, who kept loading the bases…we took advantage of that with some hits,” said Mendoza.
Davis scored just three runs on six hits. The Pirates committed two errors.
Sunnyside (2-16) will close its 2014 regular season campaign this coming Saturday with a twin bill at home against Davis.
