Mabton’s Mireles, Rodriguez medal at Grandview invite

GRANDVIEW – It was Gabriel Mireles and Emiliano Rodriguez of Mabton who fared the best at the Grandview Invitational from among their teammates.

Mireles earned third-place honors in the 106-lb. weight class. He opened the competition with a major decision (15-3) over Lindburg’s Zac Goe.

“It was a good opening round win for Gabriel,” said Viking Coach John Kilian.

“Then, he met one of Grandview’s State competitors, Marizza Birrueta,” Kilian said.

That bout didn’t go well for Mireles.

“The beast from a little further east got a pin in 3:45,” Kilian said, giving Mireles credit for battling the Lady ‘Hound for so long.

The loss placed Mireles in the consolation rounds, and he quickly recovered to pin Josh Strickland of Hanford in less than a minute.

The consolation finals was the final bout for the Vike, who earned a close 4-2 win against Zach Trujillo of West Valley for third place.

“Gabriel had a good day,” said Kilian.

Rodriguez was the only other Viking to place in the top four. He earned fourth-place honors in the 132-lb. division.

He opened with a pin in 45 seconds over Nick Dix of Goldendale.

“It got much tougher after that,” Kilian said of Rodriguez’s matches.

Mason Marenco of Mt. Si earned a major decision (12-2) over Rodriguez, forcing the Viking into the consolation bracket.

He was able to earn a 12-5 decision over Desiree Zavala of Grandview to move into the consolation finals for third/fourth place.

“Emiliano got smoked by Deven Maddy of Lindburg, who won a major decision,” Kilian said of the final 14-3 score.

Mabton’s Rudy Ramirez was the only other Mabton grappler to win a bout. He was 1-2 in the 170-lb. weight class.

Jose Amezcua (106 lbs.), Salvador Urbina (195 lbs.) and Isaac Velasquez (220 lbs.) were all 0-2 on Saturday.

“I was pleased to have two in the top four…I was proud of Rudy (Ramirez) for winning a match,” said Kilian, noting the Lady Vikings didn’t compete at the Grandview Invite.

Mabton tonight (Tuesday) travels to Goldendale to face the Timberwolves and Granger in a double-dual meet.
