YAKIMA – The Sunnyside Grizzly basketball team pounded its way to a double-digit lead, then held on for a 50-41 victory at Eisenhower last Friday in CBBN action.
The Grizzlies built a 25-17 lead at the half, and stretched it to double figures in the third quarter, 40-28, before the Cadets tried to mount a late charge.
“We played hard and aggressively to get a lead and then played with that lead for the rest of the game,” Sunnyside Coach Geoff LaBrant said in his praising his players.
He says the key to jumping on Ike and sustaining the momentum was practice the week before. “In practice this past week, we made sure to emphasize particular things we would see in Friday’s game, and the practice paid off because the guys executed well,” LaBrant said.
Sunnyside used a balanced attack to dispatch Ike, with Cody Fernandez tallying 11 points and Joel Ortega 9 for the Grizzlies.
Leo Palacios posted a monster game for Sunnyside, who according to Grizzly stats dished out seven assists and collected six steals to go with four points and four rebounds.
Ortega led Sunnyside in the paint with a team-high six rebounds.
Sunnyside (4-9, 4-14) closes out regular season play with its senior night home finale this coming Friday against Moses Lake and a contest at Eastmont on Saturday.
LaBrant noted the Grizzlies also are assured of a play-in game next Monday, Feb. 17. A win and Sunnyside would move on in the postseason, while a loss next Monday will wrap up its 2013-14 campaign
