BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
WALLA WALLA – Sunnyside Christian had its hands full against DeSales last night and had to battle to eke out a 61-59 non-league win.
The game-winning shot was made by Cody Gamboa as the clock expired in overtime.
Gamboa was one of three Knights to score in double digits last night against the Irish. He tallied 10 points, as did teammate Joel Martin.
Drew Scheenstra was the leading scorer against DeSales with 13 points.
DeSales had an early one-point lead (11-10) in the opening quarter, but Sunnyside Christian rallied in the second quarter to outscore the Irish 11-8 for a 21-19 halftime score.
The third quarter didn’t go so well for the Knights as DeSales outscored them by 10 points. The Irish ended the quarter with a 41-33 lead.
Sunnyside Christian didn’t give up. The Knights fought for every one of its next 22 points to end regulation tied at 55 points.
In overtime both teams scrapped to get ahead. The teams were unable to get into double digit scoring in OT, each getting just four points before the game-winning shot made by Gamboa.
For DeSales it was about the offensive attack. Cameron Richman scored 25 of the Irish’s 59 points. Teammate Darryl Galloway tallied 10 points.
Sunnyside Christian (14-4) will this coming Friday host Trout Lake and on Saturday Lyle-Wishram visits the Knights.
