Lady Vikings notch two wins on the road

The Mabton girls basketball team this past Friday and Saturday won both its road games.

On Friday, the Lady Vikes defeated Naches 64-55, and on Saturday they toppled Highland, 76-36.

“As a player and a coach you like this time of year because you’re playing a lot of games and hopefully securing a playoff spot,” said Mabton Coach Chris McCallum.

He said, “We’ve done both of these things.”

As of Saturday, Mabton played five games in 10 days and although it can be tiresome, they have been playing well, according to McCallum.

“I’m pretty sure my girls are feeling it…I’m surprised we had any legs left this weekend, but the girls found a way to win,” he said.

On Friday, the Lady Vikings had to play from behind with just five minutes left in the game, but they knocked out a nine-point win.

Naches opened the game with an 18-11 lead. Mabton took over in the second quarter, outscoring the Rangers 19-10 for a 30-28 lead at intermission.

Naches took over again in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Vikings 20-16, but Mabton made the final stanza count as it added 18 points to the final score and held the Rangers to just seven points.

Lady Viking Alyssa Nash had a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards. Teammate Desanay Guerrero also got a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing the ball from the glass 12 times.

Cassidy McCallum and Soila Zaragoza contributed another 23 points to the final tally.

For Naches, it was Kaley Roberts that scored a team-high 12 points.

On Saturday, Highland was shorthanded and Mabton was able to capitalize on a deeper bench.

The Lady Vikings surged ahead of the Scotties on a 21-8 run in the opening quarter.

Mabton continued with the forward momentum, outscoring Highland 15-11 in the second stanza, 21-10 in the third period and 19-7 in the final quarter.

Nash, Zaragoza and Guerrero scored 18 points each for the Lady Vikes. Nash got another double-double, grabbing the ball from the boards 11 times.

Highland’s Danielle Packard scored 12 points.

“Now we just have to see where things fall into place for seeding for the District tournament,” said McCallum.

This coming Friday Mabton will host Cle Elum-Roslyn and Saturday the Lady Vikes will travel to Goldendale.
