YAKIMA – “We talk about being efficient and coming out as aggressive as we can,” Grizzly soccer coach David Guevara says of his team’s approach.
Well, you can’t get much more efficient or aggressive as four goals in the first 27 minutes of a match, including a hat trick in a span of six minutes, as the Sunnyside High School squad demolished host Eisenhower 6-1 last night.
Noe Meza got things started for Sunnyside Tuesday night with a goal in the 12th minute, assisted by Jesus Marquez.
Meza, a sophomore, was just getting warmed up as he struck again in the 15th and 18th minutes, assisted by Christian Chavez and Alexander Marin.
“That in my mind would have to be a record,” Guevara said of Meza’s three goals in a span of just six minutes. It was also his second consecutive match with a hat trick.
“Noe is a persistent presence. He is the energizer bunny, he just will not stop,” the coach said.
Chavez put Sunnyside up 4-0 in the 27th minute on Marin’s second assist of the match. “Marin hasn’t scored in the last couple of games, but he’s having a big impact assisting people.”
The Grizzlies added to their lead in the second half when Chavez found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 68th minute. The junior tacked on a last-second goal assisted by Enrique De La Cruz to also earn a hat trick last night, giving Sunnyside two for the match.
That might also be a record.
“That’s something I can’t recall seeing before,” Guevara said of recording two hat tricks in one match.
Ike’s lone goal came in the 72nd minute by Rene Licea.
Sunnyside keeper Manuel Calvillo hustled for three saves to help keep the Cadets at bay.
Guevara was much more pleased with his team’s defense, especially after having surrendered three scores in the game before.
“Our defense played great,” the coach said, noting the second half saw primarily reserves taking the field for Sunnyside. “Jacob Meza (Noe’s brother) is a great leader back there.”
Sunnyside improved to a perfect 9-0 on the season with last night’s victory and now prepares to host Davis this coming Friday.
