Unbeaten Ephrata nips Lady ’Hounds

GRANDVIEW – The visiting Ephrata Tigers this past Saturday scratched and clawed at the Lady ‘Hounds, eking out a 2-1 victory.

All three goals were put into the net in the first half of action at Rich Leenhouts Stadium.

The match was as close as the score indicated, according to Grandview Coach Anne Holden, noting the Lady ‘Hounds had seven scoring opportunities.

The Tigers tallied nine shots on goal.

Holden said Grandview didn’t make the win for Ephrata an easy one.

It took 16 minutes before the Tigers drew first blood. Astride Ham scored unassisted.

Grandview equalized the match in the 35th minute. Jamila Shafer dished the ball to Jackie Orduno, who delivered it between the crossbars.

Ephrata went on the attack and just four minutes later reclaimed the lead when Kendal Sage got the ball into the back of the net.

“At one point in the second half the Lady ‘Hounds had Ephrata under the pump for about 25 minutes, threatening to beat their unbeaten record,” said Holden.

“What a fun game…when we are focused, we can play with any team in our league.”

Holden credited freshman Ana Karen Marquez for frustrating the Tigers’ leading player, Hayley Berryman. “Ana did not allow Berryman to play her usual game…it was great to see.”

Grandview keepers Madison Trevino and Jamila Shafer combined for seven saves, while Ephrata’s Adrianna Simions kept the ball from hitting the back of the net six times.

Grandview (3-4, 5-8) today (Tuesday) will visit Othello to take on the Huskies in hopes of avenging an earlier 2-0 loss.
