Mabton rallies late but comes up short

PASCO – In spite of a late game offensive push, Mabton was unable to come up with a win against the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars this past Friday.

The Vikings were down 31-8 at halftime, but recovered to make it close before eventually falling, 38-20.

“We had a hard time stopping the running back,” Mabton Coach Trevor Curtis said of his team’s opening half defensive tactics.

Offensively, Mabton’s Nico Pina was on the injured list, so Roy Zavala filled in as quarterback. He threw the ball for 280 yards on 19 completed passes. Two of those passes resulted in touchdowns, and he rushed for a third touchdown.

Grabbing the ball from the air five times was Emiliano Rodriguez of the Vikings. He gained 71 yards on the five catches and ran the ball in for a touchdown.

Teammate Edgar Diaz caught four passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Another five passes landed in the hands of Alex Espinoza for 50 yards.

Tony Espinoza caught two of Zavala’s passes for 38 yards.

“It was by far the best offensive effort of the season,” said Curtis.

He said the offense pulled together, but the defense struggled a bit.

Overall, he was pleased with the results.

“It was a really good game,” said Curtis, adding the Vikings had a good comeback in the closing half.

Mabton (1-5) will this coming Friday host Waitsburg-Prescott for the last home game of the season.
