GOLDENDALE – The Sunnyside Christian Lady Knights are headed to the State tourney after defeating Lyle and Klickitat this past Saturday to lay claim to the District title.

In addition to the top spot in the district, five Lady Knights have been named to the all-league team. Stormee Van Belle, Kate Newhouse, Annie Brouwer, McKenzie Benjert and Brittany Broersma all were honored, and Broersma was also named the MVP of the league.

“The girls fought hard all day,” Sunnyside Christian Coach Stephanie Dalrymple said of Saturday’s District tourney matches. “We played together as a team and stayed very aggressive.”

The first match was against Lyle, who had won a playoff against Bickleton earlier in the week to reach the District tournament. The Lady Knights won in three sets, 25-14, 25-15, 25-19.

Next up for Sunnyside Christian was Klickitat, the number two seeded team in the district going into the tourney. The Lady Knights won the match in three sets, 25-20, 25-13, 25-22.

The Lady Knights then had one final match, against Klickitat again, and took it in four sets. Sunnyside Christian won the first set 25-12 before Klickitat evened it up with a 25-18 victory. But the Lady Knights took the final two sets, 25-14, 25-21, to keep their unbeaten record intact.

Lady Knight Brouwer was 52-for-58 serving in the tourney with 11 kills, 27 perfect passes and 26 digs. Teammate Aydan Harrington had 30 assists.

Broersma had 19 kills, 16 perfect passes and 11 blocks at the net. Newhouse put in a 39-for-44 performance from the service line with 21 perfect passes. Newhouse also dug up the ball 18 times and slammed the ball over the net for 24 kills.
