What are the serious behavioral issues facing Sunnyside youth?
What do you think the legal consequences in this community should be if the police catch an adult providing alcohol to underage youth?
Those are just two of the 23 questions Sunnyside United officials are asking the community in a survey focused on youth drug and alcohol use.
Sunnyside United is the recipient of an $84,000 grant through the Washington State Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery to reduce underage drinking and address other substance abuse issues.
As part of this grant, the group collects data annually on adult’s views regarding youth alcohol use. This, and other available data will assist Sunnyside United in updating its community-wide plan to address youth alcohol and other drug use.
Cathy Kelley is the coordinator for Sunnyside United, and she notes this is the second annual survey. A total of 579 surveys were returned by Sunnyside residents last year.
“There were some good things and some obvious areas of concern regarding parent attitudes,” Kelley said of the 2012 survey results.
As for the survey launched last month for 2013, she’s hoping at least 600 Sunnysiders will respond to build on the results of the first survey.
“One thing to note is that last year’s survey did not ask questions about marijuana,” she said of one difference in the 2013 survey questions. “With the legalization of marijuana, questions have been added this year.”
She says the deadline to participate in the survey is Friday, Nov. 22.
The 2013 community survey on drug and alcohol use among youths is available on pages 17 and 18 in today’s Daily Sun News newspaper.
The surveys can be dropped off at the Daily Sun News office, 600 S. Sixth St.; the Sunnyside School District office, 1110 S. Sixth St.; and the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, 230 E. Edison Ave.
The survey can also be taken on-line.
