LEAVENWORTH – Nestled on the eastern cusp of the Cascades like a magical snow globe, the Bavarian village of Leavenworth is America’s ultimate holiday destination.
During the first three weekends in December the village welcomes thousands of people who gather for the official Christmas Lighting Festival. The entire town comes alive with holiday cheer and dazzling illumination. At last tally close to half a million lights graced the park and surrounding buildings.
Festivities shine all through the month of December. Visitors enjoy sleigh rides, carolers, roasted chestnuts and holiday characters. They delight in unique shopping opportunities and are entertained by musicians and actors showcasing their talents in live theater and concerts.
Meanwhile, just outside the twinkling town center, mountains beckon with downhill skiing at Steven’s Pass. Nordic trails and snowshoeing is easily accessible minutes from town.
The first three weekends of December start with Friday entertainment in the Gazebo in Front Street Park. On Saturday and Sunday the festivities begin at noon with Santa and live musical performances all day. The lighting ceremony will start at 4:15 p.m. each weekend.
Leavenworth will also be holding several seasonal concerts and theatrical performances, including Christmas harp concerts by Bronn Journey, living nativity scenes, Christmas in the Mountains concert by Village Voices and “It’s a Wonderful Life” staged by Leavenworth Summer Theater at the Festhalle.
