MOSES LAKE – Stepping out in the first event of the winter boys swim season, Sunnyside High School’s Ricardo Perez claimed first place honors in the 50-yard freestyle at the Moses Lake High School sprint meet held last Thursday.
Perez clocked 25.44 seconds to claim the 50-yard freestyle victory. Perez also placed fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 33.61. Jared Vargas of Wenatchee was the winner in the event with a time of 29.67.
SHS teammate Adrian Moreno claimed a top 10 finish in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 36.12. Andrew Sader of Davis took home first place honors with a sprint of 29.02. Moreno later placed 11th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.13.
Fellow Grizzly swimmer Mathew Marquez also placed in the top 10, in the 100-yard freestyle, stopping the clock at 1:04.3. Eastmont’s Hank Bergstrom was first with a time of 52.02.
“The guys did a great job at the sprint meet,” said Carl Scott, the SHS swim coach. Scott noted Sunnyside only had three swimmers participating.
Sunnyside High School swimmers will be in the pool again on Thursday, Dec. 12, at Yakima’s Lions Pool in a four- school meet. Sunnyside will face off against Eisenhower, Davis and Eastmont.
