Grandview victorious

YAKIMA – The Grandview Greyhounds are the first team to win the Terry Allen Classic Trophy two times at the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic.

The Greyhounds accomplished the feat after defeating Burlington-Edison 64-60 at the Yakima Valley SunDome this past Saturday.

“We survived a cold shooting performance from the perimeter,” said Grandview Coach Glenn Braman.

The first time Grandview won the Terry Allen Classic was in 2009 during the inaugural showdown. That year the Greyhounds defeated Granger 54-48.

This year’s win was a testament to a team effort, according to Braman. He said every player had a contribution.

The Greyhounds outscored Burlington-Edison 18-17 in the opening quarter, but the Tigers challenged Grandview.

In the second quarter Grandview remained on top, outscoring the Tigers by three points.

The Greyhounds led the game 39-35 at the intermission.

Burlington-Edison held Grandview to single-digit scoring in the third quarter, besting the Greyhounds 10-7 to narrow the lead to just one point.

“The team really pulled together and got the stops and scores when we really needed them,” said Braman.

In the final stanza, the Greyhounds were able to maintain the lead, outscoring the Tigers 18-15 for a final score of 64-60.

“Our team defense needs to improve on the nights when shots aren’t falling,” Braman said of allowing Burlington-Edison within range of winning the game.

He said there was some adversity, which was good for the ‘Hounds because it forced the team to battle back from being behind late in the final quarter.

There was also some foul trouble, Braman said. He said that forced the bench to keep the Greyhounds in the game.

The leading scorer for Grandview was Isaiah Ruiz with 22 points. Teammate Isaiah Gonzales tossed in another 19 points.

For Burlington-Edison, it was Isaak Davies, Rudy Mataya and Jacob Camps combining for 36 of the team’s points.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) Grandview will host Sunnyside.
