Sunnyside Finance Director David Layden told the Sunnyside City Council this past Monday night that the costs of information technology services from Yakima County will not increase, but that the city’s computers need to be upgraded.
The city is getting its services through Yakima County and had some unspecified issues last year. Layden said after two meetings to review the performance of its staff, the county agreed to provide services with no increase in cost to the city next year.
He also told the council that city computers running Windows XP or Windows 2003 will need to be upgraded because both operating systems will soon be unsupported by Microsoft, which could leave the city vulnerable.
“So all the computers that currently have either XP or 2003 will have to be upgraded to Windows 7,” he said.
Layden said the city will also need to identify any programs that do not run under Windows 7 and find fixes.
The upgrade will include improvements to the police department’s server and four other servers the city uses.
Councilman Jason Raines asked if the upgrades will be hardware or just a software update. Layden said it will mostly be software only, although some computers may need to be changed out to new hardware. Raines noted that Microsoft Office 2003 will also not be supported starting in April of next year.
Deputy Mayor Don Vlieger requested a matrix of how informational technology is divided across city funds so the council can see from where the money for the city’s computers is coming.
