Honoring the late PGA Tour member Payne Stewart with his stylish duds, Mark Koreski hits an approach shot on the opening hole Saturday morning. Koreski had rounds of 92-83 in Banana Belt play this past weekend.

A redshirt junior on the University of Idaho men’s golf team this fall, Zach Wanderscheid claimed top honors in the 2013 Banana Belt.

The Goldendale native posted a two-day total of 5-under-par 139 at Sunnyside’s Black Rock Creek Golf Course.

This year’s Banana Belt invite, the largest tournament of the year at the Sunnyside course, drew a field of 71 golfers. The 57th annual invite was staged this past weekend.

Wanderscheid grabbed a share of the first day lead by carding a 3-under-par 69. Mabton’s Nathan Espinoza matched Wanderscheid’s score Saturday, but fell out of contention on Sunday by shooting a 79.

The eventual champion posted a 2-under-par 70 in day two action, which gave Wanderscheid a three-stroke cushion over runner-up and 2011 champ Gary Hutchins of Yakima.

Hutchins actually turned in the splashiest round of the tourney, firing a 6-under-par 66 (33-33) on Sunday after opening with a 4-over 76. Hutchins knocked down eight birdies, four on each side, during Sunday’s round.

Tallying the third lowest score this past weekend was 2010 Banana Belt champion Chris Indall of the Tri-Cities. He finished at 2-over on rounds of 73-73.

Last year’s top finisher, Yakima’s Troy Wilmoth, ended up in a three-way tie for eighth with a two-day total of 153 (76-77).

Low net of field honors (actual score minus handicap) this year were claimed by Randy Boast. He shot rounds of 91-85.

The 2013 Banana Belt field was divided into three flights.

Those who cashed in the championship flight included Wanderscheid as low gross of field winner ($700), Hutchins - low gross ($600), Indall – second low gross ($500), David Stokes – third low gross ($400), Brad Donahue – fourth low gross ($300), Laney Anderson – low net ($600), Espinoza – second low net ($500), Carol Monholland – third low net ($400), Greg Gustafson – tie fourth low net ($150) and Dave Wilson – tie fourth low net ($150).
