Parents of children who need a backpack for school should stop in at The Cellular Connection in Sunnyside (2680 Yakima Valley Highway) at noon tomorrow for the store's backpack giveaway. Saturday's effort is part of a national promotion by The Cellular Connection, the largest Verizon Wireless retailer in the United States. The company has donated 60,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway initiative. Families can bring their children to the store between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, to receive a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. Backpacks will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Steven Venture, manager of the Sunnyside store, said the store has 50 backpacks available. Sunnyside residents have also joined the cause. Since the beginning of May, The Cellular Connection customers have been given the option to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar with the difference going directly toward the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. According to the National Retail Federation, the average person with children in grades K-12 will spend $95.44 on school supplies such as notebooks, pencils and backpacks. On top of that, nearly 16 million children in the U.S. live in poverty. The Cellular Connection is doing its part to ensure that as many children as possible are set up for educational success.
