Department of Licensing fees rising dramatically

Motorists renewing their driver's licenses will have higher fees to pay, come Oct. 1.

The Washington State Department of Licensing announced earlier this month that several fees related to driver and vehicle licensing charged by the department are set to increase.

These fee increases, passed by the 2012 state legislature, are required to continue to fund the operation and maintenance of the roads, streets, bridges, ferries, transit systems and other services that make up the state's transportation system.

Fee increases include driver licenses, from $25 to $45; ID cards, from the current rate of $20 to $45; CDL fees, which are currently $61 and will increase to $85; and license applications or exams will increase from $20 to $35.
