Extreme winter weather shelter seeking volunteers

With frigid winter weather right around the corner, the Sunrise Outreach Center extreme winter weather shelter program is gearing up for operation.

Current plans call for the shelters in Sunnyside and Yakima to open in mid-November. The shelters are staffed by volunteers and while many volunteers return each year, additional volunteers are sought. Area residents wanting to volunteer to staff the extreme weather shelters must attend a one-time, one-hour training class.

Sunnyside training dates are set for Thursdays, Oct. 25, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8, all beginning at 6 p.m. at the Sunnyside Oasis Church, located at 344 N. 11th St.

In addition, those unable to volunteer but would still like to help the valley's homeless population can donate winter coats, gloves, scarves, stocking hats, socks, blankets, coffee, sugar, coffee creamer, coco and other non-perishable food items.

The Sunnyside donation drop-off location is at the First Christian Church in Sunnyside, which is located at 321 S. Eighth St., Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon.
