This coming Fourth of July the Sunnyside Lions Club, Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, HAPO Community Credit Union, Sunnyside Community Hospital and the city of Sunnyside have planned a day filled with fun and activities for everyone.
A brand new Fourth of July Parade will begin at 4 p.m. The parade route will start at Warehouse Avenue, traverse South Sixth Street to East Edison Avenue and continue on East Edison Avenue to Sunnyside High School.
The grand marshal for this year's parade will be Les Amundson.
In the parade will include classic cars and vintage tractors that will later be on display at SHS's Clem Senn Field.
The gates to Clem Senn Field will open to the public at 5:30 p.m. Donations for the event will be accepted, but a fee will not be charged at the gates.
Community members wanting to support the local Fourth of July celebration can do so through donations at Sunnyside's Banner Bank, as well.
At 6 p.m. a Fourth of July program will begin. Organizers are still looking at special guest speakers for the event. The program will begin with a 21-gun salute conducted by the Lower Valley Honor Guard and local Boy Scouts.
At 6:30 p.m. will be the Miss Firecracker Pageant. The pageant is the senior project of Sunnyside High School student Jocelyn Martinez and is open to young ladies up to the age of 19. There are seven age division categories for the young ladies, and applications can be picked up at the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce office.
Entrants are being asked to donate three canned or non-perishable food items to benefit local food banks.
Organizers for the Fourth of July celebration are also still seeking non-profit groups wishing to serve as vendors for the event. Those wishing to use the event as a fundraiser can do so by picking up a vendor application form at the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, contacting Barb Bloomfield-Lange at 509-366-1184 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Julia Hart is an additional contact and she can be reached by calling 643-2033.
Activities, such as sack races and other fun, will be available throughout the celebrations.
To cap off the event, a fireworks display will begin at dusk.
