GRANDVIEW - The Grandview Grid Kid C team of nine-year-olds finished an undefeated season this past Saturday to claim the Yakima Valley Grid Kid Association's league title in their division.
The Grandview team defeated Zillah 26-19 in Yakima to earn the title and end a spotless season at 10-0.
Trey Sanchez, Ricardo Abarca and Felix Medina all ran for touchdowns to lead Grandview to the championship victory.
"We had a great bunch of kids, they worked hard and they were very coachable," said Coach Chuck Stegeman. "They were all key contributors at one time or another during the season."
Stegeman said another key to besting a league that features 20 teams from as far away as Kittitas was his staff of volunteers.
"I had three assistant coaches and with little guys it's important to have enough people to help," he said of assistants Richard Trinidad, Gabe Ezqueda and Daniel Lopez.
Stegeman and his coaches guided Grandview through a 7-0 league record followed by playoff wins over teams from West Valley and Sunnyside to reach the finals on Saturday.
Stegeman said the legacy of this year's team goes beyond a perfect season in 2009.
"It creates interest in the program," he said in looking to the future. "We had 116 kids this year, that's head and shoulders more than we've ever had before. Success helps your numbers build."
