The Sunnyside Police Department is reporting it apprehended a felon late last night who, say officers, was firing a handgun at motorists.
According to Sgt. Kent Coffman, a local resident called in to the police station at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday evening to report a man was walking through the 300 block of South Hill Road, waving a gun and firing the weapon at passing traffic. Within a few minutes, Coffman said, local police officers and WSP troopers located the suspect, as described by a witness, and took him into custody.
The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Rogelio J. Fuentes, reportedly a felon who is not an American citizen.
Coffman said officers also recovered a .38-caliber semi-automatic handgun. Evidence collected at the scene, said Coffman, verifies the information provided by the witness as to the gun being discharged in that residential area of Sunnyside.
Fuentes was booked into the Sunnyside jail on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and being an alien in possession of a firearm. Coffman said Fuentes will be transferred to the county jail, pending his trial.
As of this time, added Coffman, there have been no injuries or damage to property reported as a result of last night's incident.
