In an effort to showcase the talent of Yakima Valley community royalty and to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Sunnyside Miss Cinco de Mayo Court is hosting a special fund-raiser.
The court has invited community royalty from Selah to Prosser to participate in the talent extravaganza to be held Friday, Sept. 23, at the Sunnyside High School auditorium.
Organizers said the event will serve two purposes.
The Community Royalty Showcase will give those who did not get an opportunity to attend all of the Yakima Valley pageants a night of great entertainment for the whole family, said Carlos Maya, a spokesman for the Miss Cinco de Mayo Court Committee.
"Plus, the funds from the $5 admission ticket will be donated to the American Red Cross to aid the recovery efforts of the recent victims and families of Hurricane Katrina," he said.
"We are inviting the royalty from all communities to join us in this fund-raising effort," Maya said.
He said the Sunnyside court is asking each community court member to perform the talent she showcased at her own pageant.
The Sunnyside court hopes the event will be seen as not just another fund-raiser, but as a humanitarian experience for everyone involved, Maya explained.
"It is also a great opportunity for us to build solidarity between our communities," he said.
Maya said the event will aid in bringing the Valley's communities together to share each court's unique talents.
"It will also encourage these young women engaged in the pursuit of excellence," he added.
Admission to the 7 p.m. show will be $5 at the door.
